I live with Chronic Daily Persistent Headaches — a medical condition where severe headaches are present 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Several years ago, I visited a foot surgeon to correct hammer toes and bunions caused by bones grinding against one another. The doctor recommended surgery on nine of my ten toes, sparing only one pinky toe. The operation itself went well.

However, almost immediately afterward, I developed extremely painful shooting, stabbing, and pins-and-needles sensations covering the entire surface of both feet — from above my ankles to the soles. I contacted my surgeon and described the pain precisely:

(1) My toes feel wrapped and bound tightly but with sandpaper between them.

(2) I have painful tingling, shooting, and stabbing in both feet — on the bottoms from toes to the heel, and on the tops from toes to arch.

(3) I have unbearable sensitivity to any pressure along the bottoms of my feet — from pulling on socks to standing and walking.

(4) I now experience random stabbing pain extending up into my calves.

The pain persisted around the clock — especially agonizing in the mornings, sometimes jolting me awake. Standing hurt. Walking hurt. My surgeon, whom I visited twice more, was dismissive and focused only on the surgical outcome.

I sought a second opinion from a foot-pain specialist and underwent a recommended capsaicin treatment — essentially fighting fire with fire. The first session produced an unbearable burning sensation. Through consultations with additional physicians and specialists, I was ultimately diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). What I later learned is critically important: patients with severe, chronic headache conditions such as Daily Persistent Headaches should not undergo foot surgery, as it is a known risk factor for triggering CRPS — a form of foot neuropathy that has no cure.

Nobody told me this could happen — and that is exactly why I am telling you.

CRPS is extraordinarily painful. My doctor recommended a spinal cord neurostimulator implant to intercept pain signals before they reach my feet. I agreed immediately. Today I carry a rechargeable battery in my lower back that requires roughly 45 minutes of recharging every other day. I still experience pain around the clock, but the device has reduced many of my worst pain spikes — previously reaching a 7 or 8 out of 10 — to just a few per day. And every five years or so, I will need surgery again to replace the device.
